Built in 1907 by Thomas Nabers, Historic Washington’s Coca-Cola bottling plant bridges the early industrial neighborhood surrounding the town’s original train depot and the beginnings of the historic residential district leading to the central downtown Square. At the time of its construction, Coca-Cola was still privately owned by Asa Griggs Candler and based in Atlanta, making this plant an early example of the efforts the beverage company took to expand and establish itself in local communities prior to becoming the huge multi-national corporation known today. Early franchisers like Nabers, who also bottled his own brand of soda waters and chocolate cream out of the facility, took special care to erect buildings more elaborate than typical for manufacturing and befitting the honor of the coveted franchise, which is evidenced in the preserved Coca-Cola medallions on the building’s facades, the stylized entry, large plate-glass windows, transomed windows in the original bottling rooms, and side porticos of the 3,000 +/- SF brick building. As production increased and use of motorized delivery vehicles became the norm, the facility was expanded to include a 6,000+/- SF warehouse in the mid-1930s, which is still used for large-scale storage today. Full paving of the facility and security fencing were added later for the multiple enterprises this commercial building has housed over recent decades. |
