Remaining still, much in its form of grandeur to which a distinguished citizen, beloved and respected Baptist minister of Washington, Henry Allen Tupper, brought to it in 1860. (Tupper had the colonnade added c.1860 consisting of Eighteen (18) fluted columns which totally encircle the home).

The home was Built by William H. Pope c.1832 as a Federal style eight room two-story on the site of a small house lived in by John the Shoemaker and was given to Tupper June 25, 1853 by his wife's father, Ker Boyce of Charleston having been owned by many noted families prior...Popes, Willis (founder of the Mary Willis Library), Bowdre ,Semmes, Tupper and Kemme.

Edward Augustus Barnett purchased the home November 20, 1908 and moved into town from his plantation about 8 miles west of Washington, making this his town house from which he supervised his lands in the country. The home remained in the Barnett family for almost 100 years!

Ranking at the top of Washington's architectural treasures, the Tupper-Barnett home is listed on the National Register of historic places and also holds the distinct designation as a National Landmark.
