c.1790 Belmont
|
|
Enduring since the time of George Washington's presidency
and the early beginnings of this country, Belmont stands with grace
and elegance on lands originally granted for his service in the Revolutionary
War to George Walton, Justice of the Federal Court, Governor of Georgia
and signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Justice Walton sold 1150 acres to Thomas Wingfield from Hanover County, Virginia in 1784 designated as the "Land on the Ridge" and it is Thomas Wingfield that began construction of the home in 1786, completing it in 1790 in the Jeffersonian Tripartite style with one center room upstairs. (The two side rooms on the upper floor most likely were added in 1806). Not only is Belmont one of only four Jeffersonian Tripartite homes left in the country, it is a wonderful, warm and inviting, comfortable, efficient Historic home that evokes a sense of the past and a calm hope for the future. |

Nestled at the edge of the town limits, Belmont
situated among oaks, fruit trees and flowering shrubs down a paved
drive is flanked on each side with board fenced hayfields, a small
muscadine vineyard and nostalgic turn of the century barns as well
as a large newly constructed metal barn/shop with shed wings. The
home boasts 4 Bedrooms, 3.5 baths with the primary bedroom on the
main level, his and her master closets and baths. Bath with a wonderful
6 ft. soaking tub, marble surround, sconces and marble vanity tops.
One enters the home into a lovely foyer showcasing the early staircase and arched entry into the formal dining room located in the center, heart of the home. There is a library with beautiful built in hand crafted shelving, spacious living room(parlor), additional office/work area (each of these rooms with gorgeous views of outside natural surroundings). Beautiful chandeliers and period light fixtures throughout. Tall Virginia style mantles adorn fireplaces on the main level with a total of nine fireplaces in the home. |
|
The kitchen with its tall angled shiplap ceiling is sure to offer
pleasurable experiences complete with chandelier and antique converted
work island. State of the art Wolf 6 burner gas range, Kitchen Aid
appliances including icemaker and a 13 Feet zinc sink rescued from
a Savannah mansion. Off the kitchen is a large prep/butlers pantry
(room with additional ovens, sink, glass front cabinets crafted
from antiques) marble countertops and more! There is also a large
open basement with windows to allow bits of natural light, original
fireplaces and where impressive beams can be observed. |
|
Large windows with original panes flood the home
with natural light as the heart-of-pine floors add warmth. A wide
porch spans the entire front of the home as well as a side porch off
the kitchen entry providing hours of southern porch time enjoyment,
early mornings and late afternoons. A side picket fence encloses the
garden area off the kitchen entry.
This most magical place has been delighting prominent owners and their families throughout history such as Col. Nicholas Long of North Carolina who purchased the home in 1794 and was considered one of the wealthiest and influential men in this area of Georgia. The home was given to his daughter, Margaret, in 1806 as a wedding gift upon her marriage to Thomas Telfair, son of Governor Telfair of Savannah. In those days Margaret and Thomas resided in Savannah and retreated to Belmont in the summer along with other wealthy Savannahians. From 1849 - 1877, the Thomas Callaway family called Belmont home as did, in later years, many other Wilkes County families for long stretches of time including several generations of the Jordan family for some 80 plus years! Today you will find Belmont to be an EXCEPTIONAL RENOVATION blend of the OLD and the NEW. One can't help but to be drawn to its abundant Southern Charm combined with functionality for today's lifestyle. Truly a MUST SEE PROPERTY! Your Southern DREAM HOME Come true!
