Historic Cherry
Cottage c. 1818 |
|
Located along one of Washington Georgia's beautiful side streets
amid other lovely historic homes and within walking distance of
the Town Square, Restaurants, Shops, Library & Museums is Cherry
Cottage built c. 1818 by John Burch, Governor John Clark's secretary
. Other accounts say the older portion of the home was built by
Constantine Church c.1819 with Henry Terrell purchasing later and
making extensive alterations. Many distinguished Washington families
have inhabited this home including the Barnetts (Miss E.M and E.L
Barnett who gave it the name Cherry Cottage because of the Cherry
trees that once grew in the front yard), and W Meriwether Hill who
purchased it in 1884 and held open houses each year to share the
harvest from his nearby farm with family & friends. The Schmidt
family gave it to the City of Washington in 1966 to be used by the
Garden Club. Mrs. Schmidt being the former Euginea Hill. |
