HISTORIC Washington, Georgia
5,000+ SF, 5 Bedrooms/5.5 Bathrooms, Plentiful Entertaining Areas 1.82 Acres, Private Landscaped Grounds, Several Outbuildings, National Register of Historic Places
$875,000

Recently reinvigorated with a luxurious and rich interior, Holly Court (c. 1833) combines some of Historic Washington’s earliest history with modern comfort and style. Standing proudly on an early planned city lot of nearly two acres, this 5,000+ SF, 5 bedroom/5.5 bathroom home surrounded by well-manicured grounds and lush privacy plantings is the jewel of the South Alexander historic district and a prominent local addition to the National Register of Historic Places. Abundant entertaining space, including a formal parlor, library, dining room with adjacent sitting room, and daylight basement extending across the front of the home, as well as ensuite bathrooms in each of the bedrooms, make this ideal for a large family, bed and breakfast, or a weekend retreat to welcome friends. A unique floorplan thanks to the preservation and expansion of the home over 200 years includes bi-secting cross-halls and front and rear staircases, providing Holly Court with an interior that is spacious but warmly enveloping. Original historic architectural details, over-sized windows, multiple fireplaces, and a variety of entry points to the surrounding gardens further compliment the organic flow of this grand historic home.

Like several storied Antebellum houses in Historic Washington, Holly Court and its evolution tells the story of the growth and prosperity of early Wilkes County. In 1819, the original lot was purchased by Billy Hoxey, a carpenter and freeman of color from Chatham County, who built the first home on the property. In 1830 the home was sold and several renovations were made to enlarge the original existing structure by various owners prior to its purchase by Dr. Fielding Ficklen in 1837. A wealthy planter with property just outside of Washington, Ficklen, like many of his contemporaries at the time, sought to join the vibrant society flourishing in town and did so by moving his existing rural plantation home by oxcart to its current location. The transported structure was attached to the front of the existing home, connected by a wide cross-hall, and the pedimented portico with upper level balcony and paneled Tuscan columns extending the height of the home were added to further distinguish this grand in-town residence. Many notable guests passed through this elegant home over the years, including Varina Davis, wife of Jefferson Davis, and her children, who retreated to the safety of this home to await the arrival of her husband and the Confederate Cabinet at the end of the Civil War.

Located just a few blocks from the Town Square, Holly Court is a leisurely stroll to the restaurants, shops, historic sites, and many friendly neighbors of Historic Washington, Georgia. Situated less than an hour’s drive from both Augusta (Fort Eisenhower, Masters Tournament, Regional Airport, Industry) and Athens (University of Georgia), Historic Washington provides an enviable small town life within commuting distance and easily accessible for guests.
